USB Patch: 2 days later

by editor @ AppleTVHacks.net on July 29, 2007

We are aware that the USB Patch released on Friday night was pretty restrictive on the requirements:  Intel-Mac, OS X files, Apple TV Software 1.0, etc.

Now that the source code is out in the wild,  we would like the community to investigate these issues and submit improvements over the existing code.

We feel that the highest priority is to make the patch work with Apple TV software 1.1.  Reverting back your Apple TV software to the previous version is just a step backward.  One shouldn’t have to be forced to do this.

Next priority is to make the install script work on other environments:  Windows, PPC OS X, etc. Correct me if I’m wrong but if all of compilation takes place on the Apple TV, (which runs the Intel version of OS X) then there shouldn’t be any restrictions on the computer that remotes into it, right?  Or you can just tell me that I’m full of it.

Of course, the ultimate goal is to wrap the geeky stuff in a nice GUI, then we’ll all be happy.  Volunteers?

So what are you waiting for?  Help us out.  All lines are opened, operators are standing by.

I think the secret is to get ssh working without having to open the appleTV or the need to have OS X. If we can solve this, then we have tha cat in the bag. Because once you can get into it, you can start changing stuff...
  • Hey,

I'm a visual designer with time to beautify your hack. I can do apple pro looking stuff so hit me up if you need help on the GUI still.

I hope this works out, I couldn't do the first hack but a 2.0 in a GUI I could handle...

Hey, here's a CRAZY idea, instead of forcing us to do this ourselves, maybe the folks at Apple could do it for us!!

We paid $299 or $399 for the device. It's not like we won't buy more movies (HD movies) or music from iTunes if we can use our own bigger hard drives.

Put out a software update. Let us use whatever USB hard drives we want. Put some HD content on iTunes, and watch it fly out of the stores and on to our Apple TVs.

The value in Apple TV is the quality of sound/image it outputs to the TV monitor, not the internal storage device.

Let anybody and everybody hook a TB or two up to it via USB then give them all something to buy via iTunes that makes the device worth having.
  • Um. All these linkbacks make it incredibly difficult to read the comments section.

I can see how they're useful to you. But beyond the "rah-rah, look who's talking about us" factor, they amount pretty much to just noise and contribute very little to this community.

Any way to turn them off for us?
  • Moduz
newyorkrebel, why would anyone buy an 80 gig AppleTV for $500 if they could get an external drive and hook it to the $300 model? I bet Apple will release Atv's with bigger, albeit still too small, harddrives and charge out the wazoo for them. If they enabled that USB port for external HDDs they would lose money.

Is there anyway to get the ATV OS and load it on an external drive, and have the ATV boot from that?
  • luck
Tony, I'm sure it would not be difficult at all to do that. Since it is possible to boot full OS X from a USB drive, there is no reason why an ATV drive image cannot be loaded on to a USB drive and booted from.

I haven't tried this myself but, in theory, there is no reason why it couldn't be done.
  • Tony
How could I get a copy of the image? I don't have a mac or linux machine, so I was hoping I could get a copy and copy it to a new drive using windows.
  • Loshuliganos
Maybe someone can publish drive image who allready is hacked with all features plugins, external USB etc.
  • luck
That someone will not be us for sure. Putting an image on our server with all the copyrighted OS X files in it would definitely have Apple lawyers knocking on our door.

The hack is working wonderfully for me (I'm using a 500gb hard drive). I'd love to be able to use it on version 1.1, though!! Is anyone working on an update?
