Step 6: iTunes will confirm the restore when complete – your Apple TV is now jailbroken. Please proceed to the ‘tethered boot’ section below.

Using Seas0nPass for a ‘tethered boot’

After jailbreaking your atv on iOS 5.1 with Seas0nPass your device requires a tethered boot. This means it must be connected to a computer for a brief moment during startup.

Note: The Apple TV MUST be disconnected from the computer (for at least a brief moment) after restoring in iTunes for the tethered boot process below to work properly.

Step 1: Open Seas0nPass and select the ‘Boot Tethered’ option.

Wait for the rapid flashing light then connect the power. Once both are connected hold both the ‘MENU’ and ‘PLAY/PAUSE’ buttons for 7 seven seconds.

Note: Timing is key. Once the you receive the success message shown below, the USB cable should be removed and HDMI cable connected before the light on the front of the AppleTV stops flashing. (Don’t worry there is ample to do this, so you don’t need Superman speed).

I just used Seas0nPass to jailbreak my Apple TV 2 5.0.1. Worked like a charm. Is there any streaming media client that currently works reliably on this version of Apple TV?

  • HelpMePlease

It won’t go into DFU mode for me…

What I’m curious about is how the new firmware effects performance of apps like XBMC?

I know there was a reduction in performance after 4.3. I’m on 4.4.4 right now and I dont want to lose more processing power to IOS.

Thanks for the easy jailbreak steps! I can’t wait for the iPad 3 untethered jailbreak though.

I have wasted many hours and have tried absolutely every combination of software/hardware on both PC and Mac- regardless of what I do iTunes simply will not install ANY modified firmware file of any version. Sorry to say this does not work.

me too..i’ve been trying everything but when restoring in itunes. it keeps giving me ERROR 3194. someone could help me please..thanks..

I had previously jailbreak my Apple TV 5.0. I still rent movies from Apple Store from time to time, so I needed to upgrade to 5.0.1 otherwise it wouldn’t let me log in.  Now that I did the jailbreak from 5.0.1 i have the FireCore icon on the settings icon, but no Nitto or XMBC. I have repeated the process several times with the same result any suggestions please

if i bought an apple tv 2 weeks ago from the apple store what apple tv is that 2 or 3??? how the hell do you know im looking through the box and the receipt their is nothing!!!!

  • Brandon Bourget

Look at the box.  If it says 1080p on the side it is the ATV3.  720p is ATV2.

can i jailbreak my apply tv 2 5.0.1??

  • Kim Callis

Alright, when I get ready to tether connect, the LED is already doing a fast blink. So there is no period of time after the I-Tune update. After I unplug the USB, start Seas0nPass and then connect to the ATV2, it immediately starts to flash quickly.  Looking at the receipt, I am wondering if I inadvertently ended up with a ATV3.

These instructions are quite poor. At the point where it says disconnect the USB and connect the HDMI it doesn’t say if the AC power cable should be connected too? or should that have been connected at the start of the tethered boot section?

Also, during the iTunes restore section, I had to select and click ‘Open’ on the firmware file but that step isn’t mentioned.
