Create plugins for Backrow

quit frap Create plugins for Backrow
Backrow, the GUI that is used with the Apple TV was quickly spotted to have a plugin architecture, intended to allow for it to be extended and improved. Apple have provided no documentation or details about this, but it has been successfully reverse engineered to the point where some plugins have been made. Thanks go to XianLi over at hackint0sh.org for the tip off.

Quit BackRow

You can download a “Quit” plugin here which provide an option to quit BackRow, and thus if you are using it as a front end on top of regular OS X, you can use it and drop back out to the OS to use other apps or media apps.

Once downloaded, unzip it and copy Quit.frappliance inside the plugin folder located here:

/System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app/Contents/PlugIns/

Make your own

For the programmers amongst you, there is a tutorial on creating plugins over at the excellent Awkward TV wiki.

A Sonos (www.sonos.com) plugin would be supercool :)

Just wondering, is there any way to actually get Apple TV software interface onto a “normal” OS X computer?

I have personally remade the exit icon to match the beautiful GUI of the aTV.

    - The original icon was a big black ugly red “X” that bothered me so i decided to fix it. Although i do thank the one who made the application because it has helped a lot.

So you can download the updated verson from my site: click on my name above.

    Thanks, great PlugIn.

@rY: DVD-Plugin? And how do ‘ya wanna watch it? The ATV has, like, no DVD-Drive.
(Or dou you want to stream it?)

What would be nice is a plugin for iTunes radio stations… Can’t figure why they left that out….

    MAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How about a way to mount SMB shares from media servers (or UPNP AV connectivity). How about a way to interface with YouTube/Google Video and stream music from Pandora? I would love to see that (and wouldn’t mind doing a little python coding to see that happen).

I have 750GB hooked up to my Airport extreme 802.11n very nicely.

What I am trying to figure out is……how can we mount this in AppleTV? AND can we have the appleTV look to the second hard drive and use it seamlessly (ala when it selects a source, 1 source is this new drive)

Once that is figured out I can start looking at how to code the damn thing

    Cheers

It’ll be nice with VLC player… or the new Democracy player which is built on VLC. That, together with a DVB-T stick (and EyeTV) will create the complete audio/video box – streaming video from the old G4 tower with it’s massive storage capacity (7 hard drives and counting!)

    oh, I can’t wait ;)

A plugin I think would be great is a DVD player plugin that plays DVD-Discs from a external DVD player plugged in the USB port. Wouldn’t that be great ? :)

  • Waggs

Its probably simple – but what about a way to add Itunes visualiser plugins as screensavers, or even regular OSX screensavers? Or has this been done already?

Has anyone worked out is Skype can be made to run on the AppleTV?

If I could run Skype and an iSight I would not need my Mac Mini with Equinux’s MediaCentral in my living room.

    Thanks,

    GT
