XviD and SSH purportedly installed on Apple TV

by editor @ AppleTVHacks.net on March 23, 2007

A thread has been posted over at the somethingawful.com forums over by a couple of people claiming to have installed the Perian Quicktime tool, and Dropbear SSH server on an Apple TV.

We, however, remain skeptical for now; they provide one fuzzy image and a ‘promise’ it is real, as well as the claim that they guessed the password.

I would like to be able to play ripped DVDs, i.e. VIDEO_TS folders. I don't think iTunes can do this, or? (DVD Player can.)

They posted this news about 15 minutes after the thread was posted. They have since confirmed what was achieved since the thread continued to grow. Very cool stuff.

Skeptical? Then you haven't read the full thread.
Guessed the password? Its same as the username. Common, have a little faith, this is not rocket science.
