How to Jailbreak Apple TV 4.4.3 with Seas0nPass – Tethered

by tomek on November 21, 2011

How to Jailbreak Apple TV 4.4.3 with Seas0nPass FireCore’s Seas0nPass has been updated for Apple TV 2 running firmware 4.4.3. It’s still a tethered jailbreak, meaning every time there is a need to reboot your Apple TV, you will have to connect it to a computer. Seas0nPas for 4.4.3 doesn’t support XBMC, Plex client, and Rowmote plugins yet. Supported are Media Player, Couch Surfer, nitoTV, Remote HD,, Weather, RSS Feeds and Overflow.

Here is the tutorial on how to use Seas0nPass to jailbreak and tether boot your Apple TV 2 on firmware 4.4.3:

Pre-launch checklist

  1. Download and install the latest version of iTunes (check for updates through Software Update located in Apple menu).
  2. Download Seas0nPass for Mac [10.6 or later] or Windows [XP or later].
  3. A micro USB cable will be required to complete the jailbreak.
  4. Disconnect any iPods, iPhones, and iPads from your computer.

Step 1: Unzip the ‘’ file and launch Seas0nPass.

Step 2: Select the ‘Create IPSW’ button to start the jailbreak process.

Step 3: The latest Apple TV software will be downloaded and used to create a custom ‘jailbroken’ software file.

Step 4:When prompted, connect your Apple TV using a micro-USB cable (leave power disconnected).

Once the light on the front of the AppleTV begins to flash rapidly, point the remote at the AppleTV and hold both the MENU and PLAY/PAUSE buttons for 7 seven seconds.

Note: This step will require the silver (aluminum) AppleTV remote that was included with the ATV2. The older, white (plastic) remotes will not work.

Step 5: iTunes will open automatically and start the restore process.

Step 6: iTunes will confirm the restore when complete – your Apple TV is now jailbroken. Please proceed to the ‘tethered boot’ section below.

Note: To confirm the jailbreak was successful a (temporary) red FC logo will appear in the lower right corner of the screen – as shown below.

Using Seas0nPass for a ‘tethered boot’

After jailbreaking your atv on iOS 4.4.3 with Seas0nPass your device requires a tethered boot. This means it must be connected to a computer for a brief moment during startup.

Note: The Apple TV MUST be disconnected from the computer (for at least a brief moment) after restoring in iTunes for the tethered boot process below to work properly.

Step 1: Open Seas0nPass and select the ‘Boot Tethered’ option.

Step 2: When prompted, connect the Apple TV to your computer via USB. Wait for the rapid flashing light then connect the power. Once both are connected hold both the ‘MENU’ and ‘PLAY/PAUSE’ buttons for 7 seven seconds.

Step 3: Seas0n Pass will complete the tethered boot automatically. Once complete, remove the USB cable and connect the HDMI cable.

Note: Timing is key. Once the you receive the success message shown below, the USB cable should be removed and HDMI cable connected before the light on the front of the AppleTV stops flashing. (Don’t worry there is ample to do this, so you don’t need Superman speed).

Hey quick question, does this “tethered” boot mean that if your using the atv in a different room it aint gonna work as you would have to boot and connect to the tv you want to use it on all while the atv is connected to power?
If so that means if your tv and computer are in different rooms you’d need to use a big ass extension cord to keep the power connected-kinda pointless i think.

Are you working on fixing this “tethered boot required” issue?  Because it’s a serious drag.  You should be making it FAR more apparent that the new version of apple TV will *REQUIRE* users to do this everytime they start their jailbroken apple TV.

I’ve done everything perfectly as far as I can tell and I keep getting this display on my screen that show a vertical USB cord going toward an iTunes icon.  Any idea why this is?

  • Jon

You need to do the tethered boot.

Plug it the USB into the ATV and your computer. Put it into DFU mode by holding the menu and play buttons together for 7 seconds until the light starts rapidly flashing. Then in season pass click on Boot Tethered. After its done unplug the USB and plug in the HDMI cord before the light stops flashing.

XBMC does work. You have to install it normally and then use the most recent nightly build. I can’t remember where I found the commands for it, but a google search should find it.

Hello, someone help please! I am doing  everything as its described here but I am getting message from  iTunes – “This device isn`t eligible for requested build” after restore process, any ideas on this ??

    thats why its called a “Tethered” jailbreak. Be a bit more considerate, it’s spelled correctly and clear and not in fine print, right at the start of the page;

FireCore’s Seas0nPass has been updated for Apple TV 2 running firmware 4.4.3. It’s still a tethered jailbreak, meaning every time there is a need to reboot your Apple TV, you will have to connect it to a computer.

Now you know what Tethered means, stop complaining you got the firmware for free, and you no longer have to spend money on itunes. Untethered will be out when it will be out, if it was easy it would have been done!

When trying to jailbreak my 4.4.3 device, for some reason SeasonPass tries to install 4.3 8F455, and this is not working, how do I make SeasonPass to choose 4.4.3 instead?

  • EvanFiddler

Hey, i have 88 GB on my e-drive free but it keeps saying that “SeasOnPass requires at least 3.5 GB of free disk space. Please check to ensure you have enough disk space available and re-run SeasOnPass”.
I have iTunes in the recent version Windows is installed on drive C which has only about 1GB ready. However, the My Documents folder is located on E with lots of space free.
    Any suggestions?
