The client Plex has been available to Apple TV for a couple of years now, but only worked for Apple TV 2 with jailbreak . Inclusive was not compatible with the latest versions of software for Apple TV. Well, that has changed since a group of developers have released PlexConnect , a “super smart and small hack program that allows a complete and fully functional client Plex in ATV2 and ATV3 devices (1080 p!) Without jailbreak”. Is that how it works:

Essentially, you run a program on your computer that masquerades as the Trailer app. Then you change a setting in the ATV and you’re ready.

Developers claim that only takes a few minutes to install and put into operation.

PlexConnect already using the new transcoder (which means great support for subtitles), and is supposed to endure myPlex soon too.

In the  PlexPass preview release media server, PlexPass also supports AC3 5.1 (remixing and transcondifica from DTS) as well as video files iTunes DRM`ed. Unlike other ATV2 Plex client, it uses XML and Javascript, which means it is super easy to develop.

You can install the official version here , or if you are using firmware v5.2 or newer, you can try this version , which contains a few modifications shown in the pictures below.

Supported devices and firmwares:

–       Apple TV 2: firmwares 5.0 – 5.2.1

–       Apple TV 3: firmwares 5.0 – 5.2.1

The original Apple TV will not work with PlexConnect.

Developers warn that these are early days yet, then “will need to find your own way around a terminal”, but “neater” installer is expected very soon.

Check PlexConnect wiki for more information.

Note: The current release does not yet run on the Synology boxes, which is apparently a lot of Python limitation.
