FireCore has just released an Apple TV supercharger – aTV Flash (black) 1.0, which features a new Media Player, Couch Surfer Pro web browser, Last.fm radio, Weather, RSS feeds and gives you fast access to plugins like nitoTV, Remote HD, XBMC and Plex client. Here is a detailed tutorial on how to install the new version of aTV Flash on both Mac and Windows.
aTV Flash (black) for Apple TV 2 is no longer in beta: FireCore has finally released version 1.0 of its flagship product – a suite of applications to enhance the 2nd generation Apple TV. aTV Flash (black) features all-new Media Player, WebKit based browser, Last.fm radio, Weather, RSS feeds and gives you fast access to plugins like nitoTV, Remote HD, XBMC and Plex client. All new features are installed alongside the normal Apple TV features, so things like movie rentals, Netflix, and AirPlay will remain unchanged.
Want to win a copy of Remote HD, an iOS app that brings your Apple TV2’s display to your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch allowing you to control your little black box from far away, even with the TV turned off? Remote HD, an iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch application and Apple TV plugin that gives you access to your Mac, PC and Apple TV (the same that brought AirPlay to the first generation atv), has just been updated to support the new Apple TV. The feature you’re gonna like the most is RemoteView: it brings atv’s display to your iDevice (iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch) allowing you to control your atv from far away, even with the TV turned off.
Among other features you will find:
- Full keyboard support in 3rd party plugins (including in XBMC)
- Global playback controls: skip songs without needing to first navigate to Now Playing.
- Dedicated Now Playing button designed to take you straight to the Now Playing view (pressing the menu button brings you back where you were)
- Easy restart and sleep.
Apple TV 2 software has been updated to version 4.2 (iOS 4.3), which brings new capabilities to those tiny black boxes that are still not jailbroken or are ready to lose the jailbreak. MLB.TV and NBA Game Time are now available as streaming content options, AirPlay has been updated to support video from iOS apps and websites and the support for Dolby Digital 5.1 on Netflix has been added (the full list of new features is below).
As you already know, if you don’t want to lose your jailbreak (and all the apps/plugins/add-ons you’ve already installed) you can’t update. But if you have SHSH blobs saved you can update to 4.2, check out the new features and then decide whether you stay with these ones or you prefer to go back to your old jailbreakable 4.1.1 (iOS 4.2.1) to enjoy some other great features it offers (XBMC, Hulu, aTV Flash and many more).
Update (10-Jan-2012): Still working!
Although the developer of Bluecop said that Hulu is not working with his XBMC add-on anymore, I decided to write this tutorial because many users report they are still able to get Hulu on Apple TV 2 via this plugin. The developer claims it won’t last but you can check it out by yourselves and try your luck. We’ll be updating this post to provide you with the latest on this topic.
So how to watch Hulu on atv2? Here is the step-by-step guide.
