Update: The new Apple TV software beta brings iCloud Family Sharing to the big screen.

Apple today released Apple TV 7 beta 1 firmware to developers. This new beta is supposed to be used for “testing AirPlay with iOS apps.” As we previously reported, one of the new iOS 8 features is the new peer-to-peer connection for AirPlaying to Apple TV.

Beamer app for Mac AirPlay

Even though you can stream any content from your Mac to the Apple TV with a native OS X (Mountain Lion or later) AirPlay Mirroring feature or by using third-party software like AirParrot, Beamer was able to grab much attention with their particular focus on just one thing – broadcasting movies from Mac to an Apple TV, in the best audio and video quality possible. With 5.1 surround sound and support for almost all common formats and codecs, Beamer is a fast and simple solution for streaming movies from your Mac directly to Apple TV. You can read our full review of Beamer here.

The developers behind Beamer have recently rolled out their biggest update yet – Beamer 2.0. The completely revamped interface is the major highlight. How to get XBMC on Apple TV 3

XBMC is probably the most popular and versatile media managing hub out there, thanks to its supports for a variety of content, provision for third party addons and compatibility with almost all operating systems. However, Apple doesn’t seem to think so, as there are no XBMC apps for iPhone or iPad nor any XBMC support on Apple TV, may be due to the misuse for piracy. But it seems unfair that the rest non-pirate good fellas have to suffer too. And although there is a way to get XBMC working on the original Apple TV, as well as on jailbroken Apple TV 2 (see more details at the end of this post), there are still millions of Apple TV 3 (and non-jailbreakable Apple TV 2*) owners left without the ability to get XBMC on their little, black boxes.

But while we can in no way add XBMC directly to the Apple TV 3, there sure is a way to enjoy XBMC content on the HDTV using a 3rd gen. Apple TV. Here’s how.

Apple TV 4 concept with touch-based remote

While the internet was churning out regular rumors on the Apple TV 4, Curved was busy re-imagining how the same would look like. And according to them, though the set-top box as such has achieved an aesthetically pleasing look, the remote would be the major highlight of the next Apple TV.

Tim Cook shed some light on the phenomenal growth of Apple TV at the stockholders meeting held last Friday. According to the stats provided by him, Apple grossed over $1 billion last year just from the set-top box sales and with our superior math skills, that turns out to be 10 million devices. That is double the sales in 2012 and quadruple that in 2011. And talking about a device showing such a geometric growth, Tim Cook has accurately said, ‘It is getting more difficult to call it a hobby these days’.

The Oscars live on Apple TV

I woke up this morning to the news of two major content additions to Apple TV. This has been a routine lately but the difference here is that neither of these adds a new channel icon to the home screen, but instead streams within existing apps. Thank God they do!
