safarihd menu Safari HD: good on Macs, great on Apple TV

Long time readers of this blog know how much I would love to see a web browser plugin for the Apple TV.

I guess my prayers have been answered. Brandon Holland (yes that same guy who’s been contributing a lot lately) has just informed me that he’s working on just that: a Backrow version of Safari.

His target date is March 1st. He said this is due mainly to his bandwidth allocation for this month. I guess his Skype Plugin proved to be pretty popular.

Access UPnP Media Servers with Home MediaCloud

banner Access UPnP Media Servers with Home MediaCloud

UPnP Media Servers have been around for awhile now. You can store all kinds of media like photos, music and video files on them. It is just a convenient way to store all your media files and have them accessible from anywhere on your network. Of course, you do need a UPnP client to access these servers. These clients are available on many hardware and software platforms but so far none for the Apple TV. Well, thanks to Bruno Keymolen, the Apple TV is no longer left out.

Introducing Home MediaCloud, a UPnP Client for the Apple TV. Now, not only can you access those media files from your PS3, Xbox 360, Macs and other devices, you can do it via the Apple TV too.

Like most hacks available here, you do need an ssh-enabled Apple TV (with software version 1.1). You also need to install a few libraries in order to get it to work. And, lastly, to support a wide range of video formats, it is advised that you also install Perian and Flip4Mac on your Apple TV.

Any questions or suggestions, you can contact Bruno directly.

Skype plugin is here!

skypeplugin dmg Skype plugin is here!

Just got an email from Brandon that the plugin has been released. The file image is available here.   It is in DMG format for Macs only.

If you have already hacked your Apple TV to run the ATV Loader, which accesses Awkward TV’s plugin directory, then you can just install it from there. Just select the Skype plugin entry and install. Can’t be any easier than that.

As mentioned previously, the plugin works as a front end for Skype. So you need to already have Skype installed on your Apple TV in order for this to work.

Brandon is providing this plugin without any documentation or instructions for now. So, please proceed with caution. He should have some instructions available soon.

If you like the plugin, we highly recommend that you donate to Brandon. The guy has been doing some good work for our community and deserves some compensation.

Now, go make some calls.

skype interview Skype plugin coming today, hopefully

In an interview with Skype’s Halina Mugame, Brandon Holland, the developer of the upcoming Skype plugin for the Apple TV, mentioned that he will release his long-awaited plugin to the public today (February 1st, 2008).

Some of us have already caught a glimpse of the upcoming plugin in action when he published a video of it on his web site.  We just can’t wait.

One minor complaint about Brandon’s interview with Skype.  At the end of the interview, he thanked Awkward TV, Alan Quatermain and God, which we are all in favor.  But what about us, Brandon?  We’re the one promoting your work everywhere for you.

Just kidding, Brandon.  Anyway, all of us are looking forward to your plugin.

Apple TV Update Delayed

by editor @ AppleTVHacks.net on January 30, 2008

Oh, the wait is so painful.  Why, oh, why, Apple.  You don’t just announce this on the day of the two-week mark you promised.  You should have told us last week or at least a day or two earlier.

Anyhow, two weeks is it, Apple.  If you don’t deliver in two week, then………   I’ll just keep waiting.  Well, what else can I do?

In the mean time, I’ll be waiting here in the corner until you come knockin’, OK?
