Hmm. Well, now you've got me curious. The version of QuickTime Player ( X ) that is included with the Lion right now does not include any Airplay icon or functionality, anywhere in its UI. If you Google around, you'll see that many folks for the last couple of years have wished for it, though!
Until Mountain Lion comes out, the only Apple-shipped-and-approved way of sending video from MacOS to an AppleTV is via iTunes. That you're saying you're doing it via QTPX, and with an FLV (not MP4) video, no less, is certainly odd and unique. Are you sure? Can you share a screenshot? If that is indeed true, it is notable and newsworthy, and many folks would want to see for themselves.
Thanks.

What you're referring to is regular AirPlay, from within iTunes to ATV. (Note, it doesn't currently work from QuickTime Player, so I'm not sure what you're talking about with that.) Mountain Lion's feature is MIRRORING of the entire Mac display, which means, AirPlay from anything you see on screen, from any app. Like, from Safari, or Keynote, or VLC.
And because your MBP (like mine) is too old, you won't be able to use this new feature.
But the old regular AirPlay will continue to work just fine.

I have a MBP mid 2010 running 10.7.4 I can use airplay from that to my AppleTV 3rd generation. from Quicktime and Itunes I see the airplay icon and when I press it, music or video is sent to ATV. Will I be losing this when I upgrade to Mountain Lon ?

Just found this on Apple's own pages:
"AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later. Supports the following Mac models:
iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)"
http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
Grrrr. I have 2.66 Ghz i7, but it is mid-2010, so no AirPlay Mirroring appears for me in Mountain Lion. I wonder what the technical difference, if any, there is between these modesl?
There better be a terminal hack to enable it for me, it's the only ML feature I was looking forward to... yeesh!

in this feature's bump to support 1080p I think I've discovered a disappointment... does this work only with ATV3 now, and not ATV2?

I know it should be in display preferences but, as I said, it seems you need a certain transfer rate for it to appear.
