$1000 USB Bounty: we may have a winner…

by editor @ AppleTVHacks.net on June 20, 2007

We are excited!!! We are currently testing an entry sent in by someone from University of Chicago for the USB Bounty that we started a couple of months ago. Hopefully, this is it.

Unlike the hack to boot Apple TV from an external USB drive that is widely available. This USB bounty calls for an external USB drive to be hooked up and used as primary storage – but not to be booted from.

Once we have verified the entry, we will make the announcement (hopefully, in a couple of days) and make the patch available.

Keep your fingers crossed.

Hope the latest upgrade (The youTube one) wont break it before you publish it.

    Keeping my finger crossed.

Great job! Hope this one works. Will you publish the Update on the blog? I mean ATV 1.1.

  • C.Greene

Oh dear lord, please let this work. Imagine a 2TB ATV.

  • Tom @ AppleTVHacks.net

Yes – we’ll make it available for download provided provided we can’t see any legal problems.

I dont see the point if you still have to sync all the media for it to play. Seems like we need AFP access back and get iTunes to run directly on the ATV so we can have a large library without synching it.

Any news on the status of this hack post update? I have a 500GB MyBook I am waiting to try. Please give us an update.

Okay Will, do you have an Apple TV? Do you realise you do not have to sync content to be able to play it on atv? It does stream you know.

So the idea is when you download something you need to store in somewhere right? so instead of storing it on your PC/Mac or drive connected to your PC/Mac why not store it instead on a drive connected to your AppleTV? That to me sounds like the holy grail of hacking the AppleTV. Every single movie and TV show i have being in a library that is available instantly to watch.

The fact you mentioned itunes though makes me wonder whether you realise the benefit of this is for people who do not use itunes to watch their files on atv.
